“Windows, Not Walls”

Microsoft is looking to initiate a hip advertising campaign featuring Jerry Seinfeld to hype the company’s image and its powerful Windows Vista technology. This campaign will counter Apple’s “Mac vs. PC” ads that have fueled the negative perceptions of Windows Vista.

“They are not seen as cool, Apple is cool. Can anyone even recall a Microsoft ad? No,” says Robert Passikoff, President of Brand Keys, a New York branding firm.

Can Jerry Seinfeld improve Microsoft’s brand equity? Or will it be as boring as the American Express ads?

China’s Loss

Liu Xiang and Yao Ming are China’s most famous athletes and icons. During the 2004 games in Athens, Liu Xiang showed the world Asians could be gold medalists in track events, as well as gymnastics. Nike, Coca Cola, and Lenovo Group Ltd, among others, have invested millions of dollars in Liu’s sponsorship. 

Unfortunately, Liu Xiang was removed from the starting blocks of the 110-meter hurdles with a tendon injury, marking the end of his Olympic efforts. “For one man to carry the burden of a nation, from a brand perspective, was never a smart thing to do,” said Mr. Doctoroff, whose agency has made ads featuring Mr. Liu for Yili, the milk brand.

Pepto-Bismol’s New Pink Move

This leader in the stomach solutions industry competes with over 120 other different gastrointestinal brands on pharmacy shelves and will try a new tactic to conquer the competition. A new print and TV campaign will be launched featuring a Pepto-Bismol hotline operator that gives tips on how to alleviate people’s stomach problems.

iPhone’s New Home!

As of September 7th, Best Buy will be the only store besides Apple and AT&T to sell iPhones at their retail stores. The iPhone will be available at 970 full-size Best Buy stores and 16 smaller Best Buy Mobile stores.

“Best Buy resells Apple’s Mac computers and iPod media players…the long-standing relationship between the companies was the reason Best Buy would now be able to sell the iPhone Apple,” said Best Buy’s spokeswoman Natalie Kerris.

2008 Olympics Etiquette!

As China prepares for the world, the U.S. Olympic Committee is requiring all of their Olympians attend a two-day course called the “ambassador program” prior to traveling to Beijing. The course includes an overview of Chinese culture and etiquette in an effort to avoid embarrassing behaviors from participants in previous competitions.

“It is a response to lessons learned that we need to do a much better job of providing a basis for decision-making; this is to make clear what America expects of its Olympic team,” says Darryl Seibel, one of the course organizers and head spokesman of the USOC.

Nowadays, home phones rank last in our list of necessities . Cell phones, wireless phone service, and many other online options have taken over landlines. What has caused this shift? Our stifling economy may be partly responsible for the downfall of landlines, because if people must decide between a mobile or home-based landline, their choice is clear.

While landlines enable you to make calls from your house, mobile phones let you make telephone calls from anywhere, send e-mails, surf the Internet, play music, and take photographs. Surely, home phone expenses will be at the top of the cut off list in an uncertain economy.
