Searching for marketing jobs in a recession is a challenge, and we’ve compiled a helpful guide to steer you in the right direction. Find a job in marketing with COSTA IMC’s Top 10 approach:
- Consider B2B: Did you know that almost 2/3 of all marketing dollars worldwide go to B2B marketing? Overall, there are more opportunities and less competition.
- Who’s Advertising?: Identify companies that ‘truly’ believe in marketing even in tough times; find out which companies are still spending; research what companies are doing with their marketing budget.
- Brand Yourself: Determine what’s your positioning? What’s your value proposition? What’s your brand identity and how are you communicating it?
- Maximize Your Background: Leverage your past experience; consider transferrable skills; and, once in, you can take additional projects.
- Reach Out: Look into your schools’ Alumni Network; reach out to your former employers; talk to headhunters. Make sure you have a clear message that states who you are and what you want.
- Trade Offs: List your priorities; be prepared to make trade offs in the short-term to get where you want to be in the long-term.
- Show Yourself: An interview is also about culture fit, so remember to convey your personality, which is not reflected on a piece of paper. Also, make sure you’re memorable to your interviewer.
- Do Your Homework: Research the company, industry, and competitors. Arrange for informational interviews. Learn about your interviewer ahead of time.
- Network: Try to attend as many RELEVANT networking events as possible. Prepare your personal elevator pitch. Follow up!
